VBS at Spirit Lake
Thirty-six youngsters enjoyed a week of crafts, games, nature-nuggets, and dramatized Bible stories in a church building, recreating the Serengeti. Teens and older juniors served as crew leaders, guiding younger children through four stations, where they participated in the stories of Gideon, Daniel in the lion’s den, three Hebrews in the furnace, the resurrection of Jesus, and the Philippian jail. Children heard each story three times, one as a story, once from the Good News Bible, and once from their workbooks. They sang enthusiastically with Pastor Pond, and drilled each day on a memory verse.
Structures serving as props—the lions’ den, the fiery furnace, the jail—were put together with student help from spray-painted drop clothes and grocery-bag bricks.
On Friday at noon, a program for parents was followed by a haystack lunch, where parents, students and staff had the opportunity to socialize.
Follow-up includes a year’s subscription to the Signs and a visit to each home. Last year VBS sponsored 13 subscriptions to non-Adventist homes. Already two non-member families are sending their children to church school as a result of earlier VBSs.
Romilda Davis directed VBS, assisted by Sharon Russell and Andrea Rittenour in the crafts room, Pastor and Marilyn Pond with games and the nature room, Beverly Davis as lunch coordinator, and Ruth Edwards in the Bible room.
