Amundson 60th
Darell and Edna Amundson celebrated their 60th anniversary on Nov. 24, 2005, with their two sons. They are members of the Beaverton (Ore.) Church.
Darell Amundson and Edna Olson were married on Nov. 24, 1945, at the end of World War II, while Darell was serving in the Army Air Force. Edna was a school teacher. They first resided in Lebanon, Ore., then moved to Portland followed by Beaverton, where they now live. Darell was employed for most of his career by the construction company that built much of the interstate highway system. Edna was a career homemaker while raising their three children.
Their Amundson family includes Kenneth and Sybil Amundson, Portland, Ore.; Larry Amundson, Seattle; Janet Greene, Berrien Springs, Mich.; 5 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Cornelius 90th
Ruby S. (Shipp) Roderick Cornelius celebrated her 90th birthday on Feb. 5, 2006, with a reception in Battle Ground, Wash., hosted by her three children. She is a member of the Meadow Glade Church in Battle Ground.
Ruby was born Feb. 6, 1916, in Walla Walla, Wash., to Elmer and Millie (Modrell) Shipp. Ruby's family settled in Battle Ground in the 1930s where her mother, Millie, taught home economics at Columbia Academy. Ruby married Emmett Roderick in 1935, and they lived in Yakima where Emmett was a dairyman. She and Emmett and their three children moved back to Battle Ground in 1948.
During the 1950s, Ruby worked as a sewing machine operator and, in the 1970s, worked at the cafeteria of Columbia Adventist Academy. Ruby is still an active member of the Meadow Glade Church, volunteers at the Community Service Center and still enjoys tying quilts.
The family includes Darlene Roderick Schmitz, Centerville, Tenn.; Delwyn and Marie Roderick, Battle Ground; Annette (Roderick) and James Wood, Battle Ground; 9 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
Hemighaus 60th
John and Ruth Hemighaus celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on a Mexican cruise, a gift from their children. Their daughter and her husband celebrated their 40th anniversary at the same time and accompanied them on the cruise. They are members of the Central Church in Spokane, Wash.
John Hemighaus and Lillian Ruth Ott were married on Dec. 26, 1945, in Belair, Md. They lived most of their married life in a home built in 1758, the same house John was born in, located in Norristown, Penn. John and Ruth moved to Spokane, Wash., nearly 10 years ago to be closer to their children.
John was stationed in France with the Army during World War II. After returning to the States at the completion of his military duty, John was a truck driver until retirement. Ruth stayed busy with homemaking and many volunteer activities at church and church school. John and Ruth remain very active and faithfully work each week at the Spokane Better Living Center distributing food to the needy.
The Hemighaus family includes: Judy and Jack McCain, Los Angeles; John and Sondra Hemighaus, Three Forks, Mont.; Jane and Mel Wilkinson, Lewiston, Idaho; Mark and Vicky Hemighaus, Lewiston; Janet and Mark Mueller, Taylor, British Columbia, Canada; 11 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
Oliver 100th
Family, friends and fellow church members visited Carrie Oliver of Monmouth, Ore., on Valentine's Day to help her celebrate her 100th birthday.
Carrie Mae Rathburn was born Feb. 14, 1906, in Hulett, Wyo., to Samuel and Hannah Rathburn. Her father was a scout for George Custer, famed military general and leader of the Battle of Big Horn, later referred to as Custer's Last Stand.
Carrie married Ben Oliver in 1935. The family lived in Gillette, Wyo., until moving to Falls City, Ore., in 1949. Carrie has been a member of the Falls City Church for 56 years. She moved to Monmouth after Ben passed away in 1979.
The Oliver family includes Larry Oliver, Stanfield, Ore.; Harriett and Bill Wallace, Monmouth; 8 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Owen 50th
Don and Lavonne Owen of Redmond, Ore., celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary May 1, 2005, with family and friends. They are members of the Redmond Church.
Don Owen married Lavonne Van Tassel in Redmond, Ore., on May 1, 1955. Don worked as a timber faller and later as a colporteur in the Yakima, Wash., area. Vonnie was school teacher.
The Owen family includes Keith and Gail Owen, Salem, Ore.; Kerry Owen, Seattle; and Kimdel Owen, Redmond.
Rupert 65th
Cecil and Georgia Rupert celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on Dec. 17, 2005, at a reception with family and friends in the Chehalis (Wash.) Church. The Ruperts lived and attended church in Snohomish, Wash., until they moved to south Seattle in 1965 and joined the Burien Church. After retirement, they moved to Chehalis and became members first of the Winlock Church and later the Chehalis Church.
Cecil J. Rupert and Georgia E. Weimer were married in Seattle on Dec. 27, 1940. Cecil worked in the shipyards during World War II then spent 33 years with a trucking company before retiring as shop foreman in 1979. Georgia has been a career homemaker.
The Rupert family includes J.B. and Diane Rupert, Auburn, Wash.; Pam and Les Leslie, Olympia, Wash.; Daren and Dave Stefonek, Corbett, Ore.; 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
Whybark 50th
Dean and Barbara Whybark celebrated their 50th anniversary on Aug.18, 2005, with a camping potluck at Lewiston, Idaho, hosted by their children. They are members of the Palmer (Alaska) Church.
Dean Whybark married Barbara Linderman on July 10, 1955, in Moscow, Idaho. They first made their home in Troy, Idaho, then moved to the Bristol Bay region of Alaska in 1962. After serving at the Bristol Bay Mission School, Dean taught in many area villages. He retired from teaching at South Naknek in 1982. They continue to enjoy summers participating in the salmon fishery.
